CCEL Christchurch is located inside the University of Canterbury campus in Ilam, a residential suburb less than 10 kilometres west of Christchurch City Centre. CCEL students are part of the campus community and have access to university facilities.
Christchurch is a great place to study. The largest city in the South Island, Christchurch is one of New Zealand’s most beautiful and friendly places and is:
*a safe, welcoming city for international students - culture, shopping, restaurants, entertainment and night-life
* the gateway to New Zealand’s spectacular South Island - enjoy South Pacific beaches, amazing scenery and skiing in the Southern Alps
*the Garden City - relax in Christchurch’s famous parks and gardens
This course is for students who need to improve their all-round English skills.
*Course length - 2-50 weeks
*Start dates - every Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday)

CCEL's Business English course is ideal for students planning to use English in their careers.
Course length - 6 weeks
Programme - Full-time 23 + 2* hours per week
Levels available - pre-intermediate to upper intermediate
CCEL's English for Academic Purposes - Pathway to UC (EAP) courses are for students who want to:
*improve their academic English skills for tertiary study in an English speaking country
*gain direct entry (without IELTS) into CCEL's partner institution, the University of Canterbury (UC)
*Programme - Full-time
*20 hours per week in class + 5 hours of self-study and 5 hours of online study per week
*Levels available - Intermediate to Advanced
At CCEL students can prepare for the internationally recognised academic IELTS examination. Improve your English and learn about exam strategies and topics.
*Course length - 6 weeks
*Programme - Full-time 23 + 2* hours per week
*Levels available - intermediate to advanced
Students can gain internationally recognised qualifications by taking Cambridge Examination courses at CCEL. Cambridge certificates can help students find jobs which require English skills.
*Course length - 10-12 weeks
*Programme - Full-time 23 + 2 hours per week
*Levels available - pre-intermediate to advanced
CCEL offers the following Cambridge Examination courses:
*Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET) - low intermediate level
*Cambridge English: First (FCE) - late intermediate/upper intermediate level
*Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - advanced level
Our group programmes are aimed at a range of students with differing requirements, including
*High school students requiring a study abroad experience that involves a strong balance of English language tuition and activities
*University students needing specialised English language classes to complement their overall cultural exchange experience
*(Non native speaking) English teachers requiring additional training and skills – these programmes have a TESOL and Teaching Methodology focus
*Specialised courses such as Business English and IELTS in a closed group environment
The TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) is a qualification from Cambridge ESOL. It is for people who want to teach English and develop the knowledge they need to become English teachers. It is also ideal for non-native English speakers who are already teaching English, and who would like to improve their knowledge. There is also the TKT Practical for people who want a certificate for their teaching skills.
*Course length - 8 weeks (full-time study)
*Level in English - intermediate to advanced (minimum 4.5 IELTS)
A semester course combining English language study at CCEL Christchurch with the Christchurch Community Engagement and Volunteer course at the University of Canterbury.
*Course length - 14 or 15 weeks
*Start dates: 13 July 2015
*Full-time 20+ hours per week
Students begin with 1 week of General English at CCEL. Following this, they join the CCEL English for Academic Purposes course for 18 hours per week. Each week they also join the Christchurch 101 course at UC for 3 hours, fitting around their EAP study.
The CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages) is a highly-regarded internationally recognised qualification awarded by Cambridge ESOL. It is for people who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. It is also ideal for more experienced teachers without an equivalent qualification.
Course length – 4 weeks (full-time study)

*have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels
*have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching
